A deterministic population dynamics model to study the distribution of a benthic bivalve with planktonic larvae (Paphia rhomboides) in the English Channel (NW Europe) ArchiMer
Savina, Marie; Menesguen, Alain.
This paper describes the development of a modelling framework to study the distribution in the English Channel of a benthic bivalve with planktonic larvae, Paphia rhomboides. Age-structured population dynamics and growth models are linked together to a compartmental transport and NPZ (Nutrients-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton) model. Used in a spin-up mode, i.e. with identical environmental forcing from a year to the next, this deterministic model converges to the same steady state whatever the initial conditions, after 15-30 years of simulation. Important features of the P. rhomboides distribution are reproduced, particularly its high abundance in the GNB (Golfe Normand-Breton) and its almost complete absence in the Western Channel. The results are discussed in...

A model for the phenotypic plasticity of North sea herring growth in relation to trophic conditions ArchiMer
Shinn, Yunne-jai; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
An adaptation of the von Bertalanffy growth model is formulated to describe the phenotypic plasticity of fish somatic growth in relation to trophic conditions. The model is developed for the North sea Downs herring (Clupea harengus). II suggests that annual growth variability during 1974-1990 was mainly due to the combined effects of herring abundance and wind-induced turbulence (coincident with the spring stratification of the water column). Springtime turbulences cause reduced and delayed planktonic blooms preceding the annual foraging period of Downs herring. The negative relation observed between herring abundance and growth is hypothesized to be due to intra-specific competition for trophic resources. Incorporated into the calculation of yield per...

Age, growth, mortality and yield per recruit of the dourado Salminus brasiliensis, Corumbá Reservoir, Goiás State, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Tos,Claudenice Dei; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Angelo Antônio; Batista,Rosana Paulo.
In order to evaluate the fate of the migratory species dourado Salminus brasiliensis in the first years of impoundment in Corumbá Reservoir we estimated age, growth, mortality and yield per recruit. Samplings were carried out monthly in Corumbá Reservoir and its main tributaries (Goiás State) from March 1998 to February 1999 using gillnets. After one year of impoundment, age was estimated from scales and the maximum number of rings was six for males and five for females. Rings are formed annually in May and June. The asymptotic length and growth rate for males and females were 37.1 cm and 0.77 and 56.6 cm and 0.52, respectively. A dominance of juveniles was verified in the reservoir and its tributaries. The instantaneous total mortality rate (Z) was 1.59...

Carbon sequestration loss following Zostera noltei decline in the Arcachon Bay (France) ArchiMer
Ribaudo, Cristina; Plus, Martin; Ganthy, Florian; Auby, Isabelle.
The worldwide decline of seagrass meadows may result in the loss of relevant ecosystem services such as the carbon sequestration within marine ecosystems. In this paper, net primary production (NPP) of Zostera noltei meadows was assessed in the Arcachon Bay (SW France) with the aim of understanding the impact of meadows decline on C sequestration capacity at a basin scale. Net growth rates obtained by means of a year-long leaf-marking experiment (2005-2006) were coupled to interannual biomass measurements (1983-2010) to obtain a direct estimate of NPP. Concurrently, an indirect estimate was obtained through a mathematical model which embedded natural factors variation (temperature, light and nutrients). Z. noltei seasonal growth and leaf morphometry...

Evaluation of "Pampa-Corte" simulation model in different beef cattle fattening systems in Spain Ciência Rural
Silveira,Vicente Celestino Pires; Casasús,Isabel; Blanco,Mireia; Joy,Margalida; Bernués,Alberto.
The Pampa-Corte model was developed to simulate the growth of beef cattle in grazing systems in a dynamic and mechanistic way. It was validated under Brazilian conditions. This paper aims to verify the performance of the model in conventional and alternative beef cattle finishing systems in Spain. An experimental dataset of 21 Parda de Montaña calves of similar age and weight at weaning was used to evaluate the model. They were slaughtered individually on reaching 450kg liveweight. The model considered genetic group maturity rather than breed, in order to adjust growth parameters, once Parda de Montaña breed is not contemplated by AFRC (1993). Parameters from late maturing group were initially used considering adult animal size of Parda de Montaña animals;...

Growth parameters of any species are fundamental for biological or dynamic studies. The quality of the estimation for these parameters directly impacts on species stock assessment and, as a consequence, on fisheries management. In order to improve fishery and species stock management, growth analysis, especially by sex, is recommended. In this study, otoliths were used to estimate growth parameters of Merluccius merluccius Rafinesque, 1810. Hake is well-known as being a species in which otolith interpretation is extremely difficult. To estimate growth parameters, the first daily increment was validated as the tool for age determination. Otolith interpretation was done according to the last results of ICES cooperative research report. In total, a sample of...

Live weight and body measurements of male and female native ducks raised in different raising systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Önk,Kadir; Sarı,Mehmet; Gürcan,Ismayil Safa; Işık,Serpil Adıgüzel.
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to determine live weight and body measurements of male and female native ducks raised in different raising systems. One hundred and twenty native ducks (60 males, 60 females) were used in the study. The ducks were raised in deep litter floor and cage systems. Live weight and body values were measured every two weeks, until they were 56 days old. Three-parameter logistic regression and Gompertz model were used to determine growth model of male and female ducks. Interactions of time-raising system and time-sex were statistically significant in terms of live weight. At the end of eight weeks, live weights of ducks raised in deep litter floor were higher than ducks raised in cage system. In addition, live weights of male...

Logistic growth models of China pinks, cultivated on seven substrates, as a function of degree days Ciência Rural
Milani,Marília; Lopes,Sidinei José; Bellé,Rogério Antônio; Backes,Fernanda Alice Antonello Londero.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to characterize the height (H) and leaf number (LN) of China pinks, grown in seven substrates, as a function of degree days, using the logistic growth model. H and LN were measured from 56 plants per substrate, for 392 plants in total. Plants that were grown on substrates formed of 50% soil with 50% rice husk ash (50% S + 50% RH) and 80% rice husk ash with 20% worm castings (80% RH + 20% W) had the longest vegetative growth period (74d), corresponding to 1317.9ºCd. The logistic growth model, adjusted for H, showed differences in the estimation of maximum expected height (α) between the substrates, with values between 10.47cm for 50% S + 50% RH and 35.75cm for Mecplant(r). When α was estimated as LN, variation was...

Performances de croissance de l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) dans le bassin d'élevage de Marennes-Oléron entre 1979 & 1982 ArchiMer
Berthome, Jean-paul; Prou, Jean; Bodoy, Alain.
Growth of the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas was monitored during 4 years, by following the recruitment of the year 1978, held in rearing conditions. After three and half years, the average length was la cm and the average total weight was 80 g. Clear seasonal changes were observed on the growth in length and weight. An important loss in dry weight occured in July, during the release of gametes. Such losses constituted 29 %, 43 % and 60 % of the dry weight, respectively for individuals which were 2 years, 3 years and 4 years old. The higher instantaneous growth rates (G) were observed during spring and at the beginning of summer. Growth model of Von Bertalanffy, gave the best estimate for the length growth of the species. During the 1979-1982...

The growth of the banded carpet shell (Paphia rhomboides) in a contrasted region, the English Channel (Western Europe): A modelling study ArchiMer
Savina, Marie; Menesguen, Alain.
Paphia rhombofdes is an infaunal filter-feeding bivalve, particularly widespread and abundant in the English Channel. In order to investigate the influence of the growth-related post-settlement processes on its distribution, a spatial growth model was developed and linked to an existing ecological model of the English Channel. This model was partially parameterized on the basis of a specific ecophysiological experimental study, and calibrated with growth data collected in the "Golfe Normand-Breton" (GNB), a region of the English Channel. Compared to the actual distribution of P. rhomboides, the results suggest a strong influence of the growth-related processes on the distribution of the species: particularly, the extremely low growth obtained with the...

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SECTORS IN CHINESE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Lou, Jianqiang.
This study examined the interdependency between Chinese agricultural and industrial sectors. A dual economic model was developed to investigate the relationship between the two sectors and factors affecting Chinese economic development. The study reveals traditional inputs, such as labor, are still important to Chinese economic development. Capital investment contributed significantly to the growth of the Chinese industrial sector, but not to the agricultural sector. The results also suggest that foreign trade has made a significant contribution to Chinese economic development. It was found that the growth of the Chinese agricultural sector depends on its industrial growth, but the growth of the Chinese industrial sector does not rely on the agricultural...

Important input factors that affect root growth under field conditions have not been included in CSM-CROPGRO-Peanut model, resulting in poor simulation of some rooting traits. Hence, the objective of this study was to optimize root growth factors for obtaining the suitable value with particular genotypes and environments. Two root growth factors including 1) fraction partitioning to leaf (YLEAF) and 2) root growth factor in soil layers were adjusted. Root mean square error (RMSE) and index of agreement (d) that were the statistical agreement between observed data and simulated data were used for considering the best fit values of root growth factor. The statistical agreement between observed and simulated data of root dry weight and root length density...
