The worldwide decline of seagrass meadows may result in the loss of relevant ecosystem services such as the carbon sequestration within marine ecosystems. In this paper, net primary production (NPP) of Zostera noltei meadows was assessed in the Arcachon Bay (SW France) with the aim of understanding the impact of meadows decline on C sequestration capacity at a basin scale. Net growth rates obtained by means of a year-long leaf-marking experiment (2005-2006) were coupled to interannual biomass measurements (1983-2010) to obtain a direct estimate of NPP. Concurrently, an indirect estimate was obtained through a mathematical model which embedded natural factors variation (temperature, light and nutrients). Z. noltei seasonal growth and leaf morphometry... |

Growth parameters of any species are fundamental for biological or dynamic studies. The quality of the estimation for these parameters directly impacts on species stock assessment and, as a consequence, on fisheries management. In order to improve fishery and species stock management, growth analysis, especially by sex, is recommended. In this study, otoliths were used to estimate growth parameters of Merluccius merluccius Rafinesque, 1810. Hake is well-known as being a species in which otolith interpretation is extremely difficult. To estimate growth parameters, the first daily increment was validated as the tool for age determination. Otolith interpretation was done according to the last results of ICES cooperative research report. In total, a sample of... |

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to characterize the height (H) and leaf number (LN) of China pinks, grown in seven substrates, as a function of degree days, using the logistic growth model. H and LN were measured from 56 plants per substrate, for 392 plants in total. Plants that were grown on substrates formed of 50% soil with 50% rice husk ash (50% S + 50% RH) and 80% rice husk ash with 20% worm castings (80% RH + 20% W) had the longest vegetative growth period (74d), corresponding to 1317.9ºCd. The logistic growth model, adjusted for H, showed differences in the estimation of maximum expected height (α) between the substrates, with values between 10.47cm for 50% S + 50% RH and 35.75cm for Mecplant(r). When α was estimated as LN, variation was... |

Growth of the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas was monitored during 4 years, by following the recruitment of the year 1978, held in rearing conditions. After three and half years, the average length was la cm and the average total weight was 80 g. Clear seasonal changes were observed on the growth in length and weight. An important loss in dry weight occured in July, during the release of gametes. Such losses constituted 29 %, 43 % and 60 % of the dry weight, respectively for individuals which were 2 years, 3 years and 4 years old. The higher instantaneous growth rates (G) were observed during spring and at the beginning of summer. Growth model of Von Bertalanffy, gave the best estimate for the length growth of the species. During the 1979-1982... |

Paphia rhombofdes is an infaunal filter-feeding bivalve, particularly widespread and abundant in the English Channel. In order to investigate the influence of the growth-related post-settlement processes on its distribution, a spatial growth model was developed and linked to an existing ecological model of the English Channel. This model was partially parameterized on the basis of a specific ecophysiological experimental study, and calibrated with growth data collected in the "Golfe Normand-Breton" (GNB), a region of the English Channel. Compared to the actual distribution of P. rhomboides, the results suggest a strong influence of the growth-related processes on the distribution of the species: particularly, the extremely low growth obtained with the... |
